Is Bali for me??

Once again I'm contemplating a trip to Bali this August / Sept with my wife & 5YO daughter.

The thing is, I have trusted friends who tell me: 'don't go you'll hate it', or 'go you will love it'. Why does Bali polarise people like this?? Are there massive difference depending where you base yourself??

I must admit, this has got me wondering if Bali is for me...

My wife & I were hardened backpackers pre-child (Africa, Latin America, SEA, but never Bali) & we are now ready for something a bit more exotic than Queensland (we live in Melbourne).

I like the look of Bali for the culture & landscape (volcanos, rice paddies etc). I know my daughter will love hanging by the pool & the traditional dancing. And we all love good food!! I also like that its so accessible from Australia & still reasonably cheap.

But (at the risk of offending fellow forumites) I'm put off by the thought of being surrounded by obnoxious Oz yobs on a drunken end-of-season footy trip and being seen by locals as another walking wallet to be relentlessly hassled and quietly hated.

Conversely, the idea of being in a fenced, sanitised resort in Nusa Dua doesn't appeal.

What do ya reckon?? Is Bali for me?? Where should I base myself - Sanur and/or Ubud?? Should I avoid Kuta?? Should I go at a particular time of year?? Should I go somewhere else altogether?? Or should I go & find out for myself??

Advice gratefully received...
