our backgrounds sound quite similar in terms of travel destinations and i love Bali but then i always have since i first went when i was 16. It is the place i go when i dont want all the hassles of major travel/backbacking adventures.

I am an Ubud guy for sure - take a look at the Alam Hotels - do a google for Alam Shanti - great hotels a little bit out of Ubud centre run by a local family - often booked out quite a bit in advance - dont worry about aircon rooms in August up in Ubud - wont need it. Great spot from which to do a little exploring. And fantastic food - at least 10-15 fantastic restaurants up there.

Maybe a few days in Sanur and day visits to Kuta/Legian to have a look - Seminyak is very nice in terms of qulaity shops and restaurants too.

The great thing about Bali to me is that you can go there and have any holiday you want from $15 a night accommadation to $2000 a night. And for me the relaxation that comes with familiarity of the island is priceless.

BUT most importantly no matter how touristy any part of the island is you will always be welcomed by the beautiful Balinese people - they are superb hosts.

Hope my view helps.

If you decide to go then feel free to ask for some more advice closer to the time - especially Ubud and where to eat !!!
