Maybe it;s true you're seen as a walking wallet, just because you're a tourist. Japaneses, Chineses and Koreans share the same fate with you.
And you're quietly hated ? I don't think so, unless you're a Jew and the place is Gaza Strip in The Middle East, not Bali.
If I were you, I'll go to Bali for relaxing etc.
I used to stay at under 1 million rupiah pn hotels: Aston and Grand Mirage hotel in Tanjung Benoa, Bali Beach in Sanur; Bali Garden, Kuta Paradiso, Dinasty and KTH in Kuta.I was satisfied with them.
Once I stayed at under 400.000 rupiah pn hotel in Jalan Pantai Kuta named Bali Summer Hotel, a no-frill hotel where I don't want to sleep anymore, because its rooms were too small.
Staying at Sanur hotels is great if you don't want to see the sunset by the beach.
Staying at Tanjung Benoa is like you live in the middle of nowhere, much like in Nusa Dua, unless you want to play parasailing and/or water-scootering.
The most ideal places (in my opinion) are Seminyak-Legian-Kuta hotels, especially those located in Poppies lanes.
Sooo, go to Bali and enjoy !
Note: Don't forget bring more $$ and Rupiah, because everything become more expensive nowadays.
