No other place like Bali???

Now everyone knows I love Bali and go every chance I get but it is getting difficult to get there.
The only way i can get there after Christmas and before end of January is if I go via Perth both ways (from Sydney). Jetstar is impossible. May get a direct flight there but who knows.

Anyway the point of my post is-
Is there a place on earth where I can (like Bali) just turn up, get a cab and get cheap, decent accom with good food and friendly people?

I went to Phuket, which I liked but it wasn't cheap (maybe I didn't find the places?). I went to Vanuatu (not cheap).
I can live without the shopping (for a while) but cost is important and also friendly locals as I would be travelling alone.

Not that I won't still go to Bali every chance I get. Just looking for an alternative for when I can't get there. I can't see it being easy to get there any school holidays (which I'm restricted to).
Any help appreciated.
