I have a friend who swears by a small island off Thailand called Koh Samet (no not Koh Samui!). It is cheap as with basic fan cooled accommodation on the beach. A heap of local cafes like warungs everywhere. Apparently a great place to chill out with the locals, just lazing around in the sun, swimming, diving etc. If you want I can get more details from Jim or his daughter. Let me know.
