New to forum and virgin Bali traveller

Hello everyone, I'm a solo traveller from Canada doing the 20hr flight to freedom and bliss arriving Jan 18 (not to mention getting away from the -30C winter crap). I'm wondering should a person book accommodation before leaving? Are vacancy rates low during Jan & Feb?I'll be staying a month and don't enjoy making too many plans. I always figure once a person arrives and talks to the locals or other savy travelers, you get the best info. I thought going to Sanur first and get my feet wet sort of speak. Then the Kuta area once I get the big V off my back! I'm not really into the 5 star hotels? Any suggestions on mid-range accom? Also, are internet rates accurate? cheers!
