Sanur is a lot quieter, than Kuta/Legian/Tuban side of the island and a good place to start.
I think you would be better off booking short term accommodation to start with and go from there.
The end of January and February should be OK for walk in off the street accommodation.
I prefer the Kuta side and do not stay in Sanur very often, others would be better off advising you where to stay.

As you are solo, when you go to Kuta you should stay in the Poppies1 and Poppies2 area.

There are a lot of tourists and back packers of all nationalities here and a lot of accommodation, bar, cafe's, restaurants, mini markets, doctors etc.
My favourite hotel is the Masa Inn Poppies1 and in actual fact every April a contingent of Canadians from British Columbia catch up with my son and his friends at this hotel.
I always recommend the Masa Inn simply because I think it is one of the best value for money hotel that I have stayed in.
Single room is 350,000Rp approx. AUS $40.

If you scroll up the main page you will see a "search the forum" link click on and you can research a lot of hotels in this area simply by putting in Poppies1 or Poppies 2 or the name of the hotel.
Hotels such as Secret Garden Inn, La Walon, The Persona, The AP Inn, Fat Yogi's, Ayu Inn, Kedins, Kuta Puri, Satriya Hotel and of course the Masa Inn

Hope this helps,
Hoolz

PS. that's how ya do it Mr Custer !
