Best to book your initial few nights (using Agoda or e-mailing hotel direct) then take a look at alternatives. I have found that most of the walk-in places I've been to are far superior to the hotels in a similar price range, but you will not find these places on the Internet or through a travel agent, so a bit of leg work there. Can't advise for Sanur-side. Everything depends on what you are looking for, but you can't really take Kuta as representative of Bali as a whole (nor some of the Aussies as representative of all Aussies...lol). If you have time, my suggestion is that it would be good to get out of Kuta to see more of the island, its culture and spirituality, and the true face of the people (not the one they wear for Westerners) - but, again, depends what your preferences are. Enjoy your trip and please post a JBR! :)
