you'll find most of the people on this forum are bogan Australians. They hang out in the Kuta area mostly and try to stand out from other tourists with their singlets, beer guts and coarse language. Not a good sight for sensitive Canuck eyes.
Sanur is a good choice if you want a quiet bogan-free introduction to Bali, but stay away from south Sanur which is rapidly developing as a bogan retirement village.
Plenty of choices for reasonably priced accommodation in Sanur or anywhere else. You will be able to find somewhere to doss down. I would take a cab into central Sanur (stay away from the south!) and then ask one of the local guys who hang out on the main street trying to sell "transporrrrrrt". They have local contacts and will be able to steer you towards something suitable.
