Your report reminded me of staying in a losmen in Peliatan in 1977.
In those days the whole area had no electricity and was very rural with distinct villages, such as Peliatan.
To find food I would walk to Ubud. I would then walk back at night down the main road to Peliatan. The road was deserted without any street lights, vehicles or people. The people of Ubud believed that evil spirits were about after sunset. The only sounds were wooden wind chimes and barking dogs.
When I reached my losmen, there would be a small kerosine lamp on the table outside my room. With the light from this small lamp, I would make my way to bed.
