Hi Gary,
I believe electricity first came to Ubud in 1978. I first came in 1986 and we always walked in the middle of the road for years and years. We always took a torch. The Monkey Forest Road was unpaved and no lights. There were many rice fields and a duck pond at the bottom of the playing field. I nearly cried when I saw the pink pavements about 20 years ago, but they were soon as wrecked as the old ones.
