Looking to be convinced

Hi, I have visited this beautiful place 3 time, but alas the last time was way back in 1999! We are now considering going next year (we would have done it sooner but we all know what happened with bombings). I'm still feeling a bit apprehensive, I know Bali devotees will say it is safe and security is good but I guess i really want someone to convince me, I don't want to feel that I can't go to shops or out to dinner always looking for someone that has a back pack left behind or something - to me that is just not relaxing. It would be my husband (who really just wants to do a surfing boat trip)and our 2 daughters aged 13 & 10......what do you think?
