go and enjoy but do not frequent heavily populated pubs and restaurants aimed at the tourists...nor stay in well known touristy hotels.
I say this as you are apprehensive.
We stay smaller more local hotels, eat smaller more local reataurants and tend to shop in Denpasar and market stalls all over.
Proceed with caution as you should do anywhere in this day and age...even home.
