I was just reading through the posts, as I do regularly, and came across a question relating to chalk marks on luggage. I thought I would share my experience and it may help someone at a later date. My first trip to Bali was in 2000 and I purchased a 1.125 litre of alcohol from Melb airport duty free to take into Bali. I knew the limit was one litre but I thought they won't care about 125ml over. I got through the initial passport stamping area no problems but when my hand luggage got put through the x-ray machine it was marked with a white chalk X. I didn't see this mark as it was my first time in Bali and I was excited and was too busy looking around. Walked on through to collect my suitcase and then approached the customs desk. A Balinese customs official noticed the large X on my hand luggage, which I now noticed, and he opended my hand luggage ( backpack ) and took out my bottle of alcohol. He then rolled his eyes, yelled something like 'big trouble' and I had to follow him to a rather uncomfortably hot room which seemed to be distinctly lacking fresh air. I sat down and he had my declaration card in front of him, which I had signed, and he circled the declaration of alcohol clause being that I am only permitted one litre. Further exclamations of 'big trouble' and 'you have to pay' were blurted out by the customs official until I said 'how much'. '50 dollars' was the reply to which I retorted with 'I've only got $20'. 'OK' was the last thing he said to me as I placed a $20 note into his folder which he promptly closed and then said I could go...no receipt, nothing else. As I was leaving an older lady had just been brought into the 'hot room' and I remained long enough to establish that she was carrying excessive perfume purchased duty free and her starting price was $100 AUS to be released by customs. I often wonder how she faired.....
