I made the decision to have the surgery done in Bali because he was bleeding internally from his spleen and until the spleen was removed he was in danger of further complications. I did not feel comfortable with having to be flown to another destination in those circumstances.

And whilst I agree we should make use of Australian medical services where possible, it is not always the safest option to fly someone home for surgery or other procedures, BUT the travel insurance providers will generally push for medical evacuation as it is the less costly option for them.

The standard of hospital that my son was in was excellent and my own doctor in Australia examined him when we came back and was most impressed with the job done by the surgeons in Bali.
