Your experience was dreadful. At a guess i'd say it might have been Royal Perth Hospital?
My experience there last month was the exact opposite to yours so hopefully it means that things have improved there all of the time.
I was in the emergency ward, was given a bed immediately and the usual hospital gown, and there were doctors and nurses in very close proximity to the beds the whole time i was there.
I had tubes all over the place but getting a bed-pan wasn't a problem and i didn't need a buzzer because staff were only about 8' away.
Patient care was treated very seriously, not just my own but everyone's. In an open ward you can pretty much hear everything that's being said.
Everything was spotless, no blood splattered walls, and they took blood samples without any problem.
Heck i couldn't even discharge myself without them insisting i wait for the cardiologist to see me first, and insisting on follow up treatment. The cardiologist took the time to explain everything in a patient respectful way and in a way that i could understand.
