in my experience, are shocking.

i was Med Evac'd out of Bali some years ago with a mystery illness. i was sent on a commercial flight with a doctor who was injecting me with medication on the way.

upon arrival to Perth, i was picked up by two of the roughest women i have ever seen (who were the ambulance staff). they yelled at the doctor that they were not a taxi service when the doctor tried to put my two bags in the ambulance.

When we were in the ambulance, one of these rough women was asking me what was wrong with me, and i told her that i could barely speak as i was so weak, so maybe she could speak to the doctor. she then looked at the (Indonesian) doctor and said to me 'does she speak english?'.

At the hospital, the doctor was just told 'your job is over now, so you can leave' without even offering a cup of coffee! the poor doctor was just shoved out the door.

The doctor in the emergency department was another rough one. he wanted to take blood and i suggested he try my left arm as i always have a vein ready to go there. he said 'nah, i will try this one as its closer' and went and snapped the tourniquet before tying a rubber glove around my arm as a replacement. of course, he couldnt get blood from that arm, so he had to go to the left one, as i suggested all along.

after being in a small blood stained cubicle, they ushered me down to some other room where i had to wait until i had a bed in a ward. the doctor there came and checked my chart and said 'youre not THAT sick - why are you here?'. Then there was a lady in the bed next to me who was asking for a bedpan and, when she said that she may wet the bed he just said 'ok then, do that. its not my job to get you bedpans'.

Once in a ward, again with blood on the walls, i was given no information about my condition or what was going on. one day, i wanted to have a shower, and was having difficulty getting the drip through my clothing (they provided no pyjamas) and pressed on the buzzer to get a nurse to help me. nobody came. after an hour and a half, i had managed to do it myself and a nurse came into the room and abused me for 'knocking the button - its been buzzing for over an hour now'. he did not ask if i was OK - only abused me for his inconvenience.

one day they came in and said, OK, you can go home today. they proceeded to check me out of the hospital without even checking if i had someone to pick me up! (as i am from melbourne, and was in a perth hospital, surely this should have been a concern?)

so, my experience of the medical (hospital) system in Australia is quite bad.

My experience with Surya Hushada hospital here in Bali last year when i had Dengue was FAR better.
