Travel Agent or do it yourself?

It is our first time to Bali and am wondering if you think I would be crazy to book airfares and accommodation over the internet myself or should I just book through an agent and get transfers etc included? Really haven't travelled much out of Australia before. We are splitting our stay over 2 places.

Also, my husband will be taking a surfboard have read you need to take your own straps to secure it to a taxi, is this right?
