No, I do not think you are crazy booking airfares/accom over the internet yourself. This is what we usually do now & it is very cost effective, though can be time consuming.
If you have the time & inclination, why not cost your trip yourself, then compare with a travel agent's quote.
Can't help with surfboard, I'm afraid.
