Very exciting booking yourself and you can discover many more places on the net than might be available through a travel agent. Personally i find that some places that you stay can be cheaper to book through travel agent as they receive wholesale prices which is cheaper than what you will be able to negotiate. So you could get a quote directly online and then also get onto your agent and have them do the same costing and see which is cheaper...
We are travelling in January, part of our accommodation Breezes in Seminyak I booked through agent for best price and then the other part of our trip D'Omah in Ubud I dealt directly with the manager there who was super efficient with email contact :-)
As suggested by someone else check out Trip Advisor and forums like this for suggestions on where to stay.
