Currency confusion confession

Hello all.. first timer here.. leaving next week and looking for clarity on the currency front... any tips on conversion calculations - I'm a fuzzy math person...

I have no idea how much to bring at first.. is there access to ATM's?
can I use my ATM/credit card in most restaurant/hotels?
... where is the best place to convert my money?
I was told already to bring large bills, and I have written down somewhere the dates NOT to bring.... but in general, where do I get good rates on the exchange?
, do I do the exchange before I leave?

Obviously, some guidance needed if anyone is willing to share!
