Hey there nycberkeley,
Don't exchange money before you leave, the rate will be better in Bali. Use Kodak photos shops where possible to change money. I am guessing that you are from the US so conversion should be relatively easy at around Rp 10,000/US$. One really good trick to save being confused with the number of zeros is to place you finger over the last 3 zeros on the Indonesian note for its denomination. This stops paying out Rp 100,000 instead of Rp 10,000.
If you use ATM's be careful of transaction charges.
