Bumbu Bali in Jimbaran.

It's run by Heinz van Holzen, includes a visit to the local markets and to the fish market at Jimbaran.

The class is very hands on - that is, it's not a demonstration class as they so often are - you actually have to get in there and cook!

It was such an enjoyable and informative experience, so if you really have a passion for cooking, and want to understand not just the ingredients, but where they come from, sustainability (of fish), cultural significance and enjoy some amazing flavours, then give Bumbu Bali a try.

I did the class with my husband a few years ago - we both still cook from the recipie book we got. Last October my husband did Bamboo Shoots and said there was no comparing the two. He felt it was more of a demonstration style class, than a true cooking school.

I've found that generally speaking with cooking classes in Bali you get what you pay for.

Bumbu Bali is priced higher than most, in fact, we put it off for a couple of years because of the price, but once we did it, it was money well spent. It a offers a really great learning experience, both gastronomically and culturally.

Bamboo Shoots is an inexpensive, fun day out, but if you already have a working knowledge of Balinese food, you may not get alot out of it.
