Don't know if there's much of an advantage changing from $AU to $US prior to your holiday. As a long time frequent traveller to Bali, I've always taken Oz dollars & changed them there, paying VOA in $AU. My brother in law (who is a local) uses BMC money changers for his business transactions. They are set up like a bank & have 3 branches north of Kuta, the most convenient located slightly south of Bintang Supermarket on Basangcasa (the continuation of Jln. Legian) on the opposite side to Bintang & always have a good exchange rate. If driving, park at the supermarket & walk there. If you're "cabbing" it, they will double park 4 u. I hope this helps you.
