Hi. You have my sympathies. It really is much easier to find a mid-range hotel (price-wise) in Bali than in Langkawi. I also agree that the TA forum isn't much help unless you have narrowed down your choices. We stayed in Langkawi last year at the Beach Garden (around A$90) in Pantai Cenang. This is a small hotel on the beach which suited us fine. Great location and food, nice beach, cons are the small swimming pool and the fact that the sea was not swimmable in March due to jelly fish. There is a lovely resort next door, the Casa Del Mar where you'll be paying about A$200.
For a similar location to the Kumula Pantai I suggest you look for a hotel on Pantai Tengah as there is more choice than Pantai Cenang. This year we're going to stay at the Lanai in Pantai Tengah as we'll be joined by my daughter and her family. This hotel is, I think, more like the Kumula Pantai. We are paying around $65 per night per room. Reviews not great, but looks okay on the internet. It'sright on the beach and has a nice pool. However, if you want something nicer (and dearer) look at the Holiday Villa or even better, the Frangipani. Another tip is to go to asia rooms website where there's lots of information.
