Not really agreeing with the cancellation of flights but in the defence of A/A i do think they only do this on routes that have multiple flights per day and also if the next flight has enough empty seats to also carry the bumped passengers.
We had the same thing once in Thailand and were on the next flight and last trip I thought it had happened again on a flight from BKK to K/L and the next flight to K/L had actually come in (from K/L) and 5 mins later our plane arrived so in this case there had obviously been a problem with the plane.
This is why I NEVER try to cut down "connection" times down to a minimum on any budget flight as they are all only point to point flights so your problem if you miss a flight for any reason.
