It's more about the people around you in a given area than the area itself.
There is little difference between Tuban, Kuta and Legian, and for that matter Seminyak as well, although I find the further north you go, the more it becomes a "Posers Paradise" with a lot of arty farty stuff around Ku De Ta and the associated boutiquey shops and crowds.
That's OK if you want to spend your time surrounded by white suited ex pat an up themselves European people, but I personally prefer the more "down to earth" local scene further south.
Returning to an area where you are familiar with the small eateries and bars, and the people (and animals) who work around them is really like returning to a second home....and for me that is what makes an area special.
