i decided to head to a local hotel for the Nyepi break as a kind of 'mini break'. the hotel has been great in providing guests with an explanation of what the day is about, and the reason for the silence.

i really am astounded by a few comments that i have heard, and by the lack of respect for this sacred day.

many guests are complaining about the fact that they cant leave the hotel for the day. a little retsearch will have told them that they are here for Nyepi, and as google is everyones friend, a quick 5 minute search would have found an explanation.

others have music blaring out, doors banging, and it makes me wonder why people cant respect the culture of others.

i know i risk being flamed for this post, but i do find it almost childlike that people have to run around yelling at each other and showing a general disregard for the Balinese culture.

personally, i like the quiet introspection of the day, and to spend a 'down day' where i am basically forced to NOT work is refreshing.

another thing that i am experiencing on a grand scale is the 'towels on chairs' phenomenon! how weird is THAT?! i went for breakfast at 8am only to find that most chairs had been 'reserved' with towels, bags, books and shoes on top.

ok. rant over. maybe i am suffering from pms!
