This may seem a strange question but I have a theory that Kuta is popular amongst Perthites because it is so busy and frenetic. as a sydneysider I enjoy the relaxation of Sanur and Ubud - if I want crowds I can just go to my local shopping mall. On both of my two trips to Perth I was amazed by its ghost town quality (and we were staying in the heart of the "city").
I think we enjoy travel to different places and Kuta certainly has an energy/vitality that dead Perth lacks.
