On my first trip to Bali in 1980, in December, so similar weather/time of year, we were out for dinner. In those days, "restaurants" were largely open sided warungs, built on bamboo platforms elevated so the entrance was up a few steps. The significance of this was lost on me, until it started to rain heavily while we were eating. Basically it bucketed down for at least an hour, and we watched the water level rise about two feet and lap almost at the level of the floor of the restuarant. When it finally slowed down we decided to walk back to our hotel, while we had a chnace!. Well what we did really was wade as the water was about up to my knees in what my memory tells me was probably Jl Melasti. In those days this was not a made road with gutters, but rather a one lane track, with a bitumen lane in the middle and gravel on each side. Not much wonder the road disintegrated somewhat after the heavy rain! Somehow we made it back to the hotel safely, although my thongs had been for a big swim. It was a catch 22 - you know how hard it is to walk in water in thongs, but if you take them off, goodness knows what you may be walking through or on!
