cruise ships

One of my young Balinese friends has just found out he got a job on a cruise ship in America, and said that many Balinese people work on cruise ships throughout the world. Just out of concern for my friend I was wondering if anyone knows much about how well they are treated by the company? Are they paid well? He is married with children so how often do they get to visit Bali?
