I know US based Caribean cruise ships recruit in Bali (Carnival I think). He will probably start at the bottom in the kitchens where unfortunately he will not get any tips and be reliant on his wages, which will not be startling but ok by Bali standards. His overheads will be low so he will be able to send money home. The norm is that he will receive two months holiday after 8 months at sea and the cruise line will pay his flight fare home and back again. Provided he has the nouse and good English he can be promoted to waiter. Pay will be no better but of course he will then be receiving a decent amount in tips. The bad news is that the cruise line recognise that he is earning considerably more and he will be required to pay for his own air fares. The difficult bit is of course the time away from home, 8 months on 2 months off.
