Help with blackness on Pestle and

Help with blackness on Pestle and Mortal please.
I bought a smaller sized dark grey, not black, rough, pestle and mortar from Ubud market.
I have tried a number of times to stop the black powder coming off the equipment.
I have ground rice and salt into it, twice.
What can I do to prevent everything having a blackness about it. My hands get black, if I wipe it, the cloth gets black.
How can I seal it?
Is it made from the wrong material?
Do I 'chuck it'?
