Can't remember exactly but I think I washed it first, scrubbed it a bit. But I do remember being told by someone to rub it with fresh tumeric and leave it on for a bit. I have used it heaps since then and don't seem to have a problem with black coming off anymore. Tumeric probably disinfects it, but I'm not sure if that is all it is used for or whether it helps seal it somehow.
