I wonder if these people actually flew to Bali with Jetstar and had no problem taking their boards out of Australia on the forward leg.
The board including the cover can be no longer than 2m. I have just measured ours and whilst the boards are within this limit with the covers on I am about 6" over. I will take my own tape measure and masking tape and if we have problems at check in I will fold over the top corner of the bag and tape it down, and hope this is acceptable.
Have flown with the boards on a Jetstar domestic flight and had no problem but is sounds like Denpasar Airport may be strictly enforcing the 2m, if they are getting you to lay the boards down on tiles.
Not that this will help flying to Bali but for domestic travel I have noticed that Virgin Blue are much more lenient with sporting goods and in fact whatever your boards weigh it will only be recorded as 5kg e.g. if your boards weigh 10kg you will still have 15kg left in your luggage allowance.
