Cheap places to stay

We are going to Bali for the first time the last two weeks of March, and would love to get some tips on nice but cheap (less than $30US) places to stay. We are planning on going to Sanur, Ubud, Lovina, and to the East (Amed?) and North West. Can anyone recommend any good bets? Also, is it generally better to book ahead over the internet or can you get a better rate in person?
