We built 6years ago in Bali, and I am sitting here now enjoying what was hard work but very rewarding. My husband is in the building game back in Aust so he supervised our villa construction closely and we bought some products from Aust including the BBQ! You cannot legally work on you own place whilst on a tourist visa, but may escape detection if you are in a remote location. It was rewarding showing modern methods to village tradesmen but also frustrating when 'double job" was needed to fix unsatisfactory work. We do not rent our place, so have no issue with taxes or licenses. Our plan is to spend more time here as we retire. We have a nice place in a great location but we were also mindful not to sink all our money or life savings into this project. Some ppl spend more on caravans back home. We are happy but be careful and supervise everything.
