What I really want to know is, what sort of relationship do the Balinese people have with Bahasa Indonesia? I understand that they speak it more fluently than they speak English, but how fluently? Do they speak it from childhood, or do they learn it in school? In other words, if you speak to them in Bahasa, how much intimacy does it imply? I'm wondering if they would receive a question in Bahasa the same way they would receive one in English - as the language of an outsider.
My reason for asking is, I may travel a bit in other regions of the country, so Bahasa will be useful for me, but my focus is on Bali, so I'm not sure what to do.
