We always take our phone with us and have a Bali sim card put in when we are there. The shop assistant usually writes down the code to use etc. and we use it for ringing Australia and for texting. Depends of how often you are going to use it but we start off with 50,000 rupiah and if it gets low because of a lot of use we them top it up again. Hope this is of some use for you.
