Most countries require visas, some build into airfare or require you to buy beforehand at embassy or consul.
The restaurants are cheap I can get a mei goreng for $1 in legian. Many countries including the Uk and France have a service tax.
Most developing nations have a dual economy one for residents another for tourists, I have been coining to Bali since 1990 always two prices, but same thing in Thailand, Hong Kong and China.
The most blatant commission for getting tourists to visit a business I have come across was in Western Europe in Eu countries
In my experience Bali is different to many places as costs are more transparent, it is very cheap.
If I have a gripe, the market sellers are more persistent compared to many places and tge porters at the airport can catch out first time travellers as they are not transparent they charge, having said that as I go over regularly and stay in the same area I am rarely hassled by the market guys and the two biggest rip offs in my travels both occurred in EU countries not Bali.
