The trouble you'll have if you pay at the hotel with the 28 degrees card is that you're subject to the rate they wish to use as well.

If the hotel cost is quoted in US$ or AUD$ they will first convert it to rupiah at whatever rate they dream up on the day since their electronic payments are processed in rupiah. Then it will be converted to AUD$ by 28 degrees at a good rate from there.

Cash is still your best bet for payment but what I usually do is withdraw extra over a few days from the ATMs and keep it in the hotel safe deposit box and then pay the room in rupiah when I leave. You can also pay the hotel bill as you go, say a week at a time, if you don't want to keep the cash in the safe.
