Carry on bags with Jet*

How stringent are they with carry on bags on Jet*,we are taking one of those LV overnight bags that you buy in bali and a sports bag. a little oversize, not taking alot so weight should be ok going over,will have to wait and see about coming home. Can a laptop bag be counted as my hubbies handbag?
