Budi sells soft drinks etc. on the beach and let me say up front I just can't help but like him. We always tip him when we pay and are happy to do so. We have had a lot of laughs over a lot of sunsets with him and he always hints about how his kids need money for this or that and I always sympathise and say that it's just the same with my grandkids etc etc etc.
He did ask me if I had an email address once so that he could email me and (hearing alarm bells loud and clear) I replied that I did and it would be lovely to hear from him but added "Just don't ask me for money" which caused much mirth from his Anak Pantai mates and the massage/manicure/buymysarongs girls. Never did get an email from him. Hmm funny that!
Anyway we had this conversation as usual about his kids need for money and then he walked away a few metres and came back talking on his phone aparently to his daughter in his village in Lombok about how he can't send her any money for school because he only has Rp.100,000 to his name. A little bit of a stretch really because he was talking in English...
