Reading the posts from the last few days, one could get the impression that Bali has become a hotbed for opportunists among hotel staff ready to help themselves to the odd hard earned Oz dollar.
We have been to Bali 11 times - first visit in 1983; trip no.12 coming up in August this year. We have stayed at a number of hotels and never had anything knocked off from our room.
If available, we use the facilities at Reception although we have put our trust in some very dodgy room safes. At one place this was nothing more than a plywood drawer in the wardrobe with a $2 lock.
On the odd occasion where we stuffed up and/or forgot our combination, it seems that most staff members can open the room safes at will.
I repeat - nothing has ever been taken.
A few years ago, a regular poster to this forum described his 'hotel honesty' test. Before going out for the day, he would 'accidentally' leave a largish bank note in an obvious place in his room. On every occasion the note was still there after the room had been cleaned.
I love and trust these people and hope that these isolated instances are not the way of the future.
