I had one of the non-reno'd superior rooms and, while I wouldn't call it fresh and new, it certainly wasn't run down.
A few cracks in the walls that were purely cosmetic and the bathroom was old style with the shower over the floor but everything was clean. The bed was comfy and the air-con worked perfectly.
Maybe just luck of the draw? Maybe I'm just easy to please? Different people have different definitions of run down or being ok too, I guess. I'm happy to stay 2 star as long as the room is clean and in one piece. I've refused a room that was filthy, so it's not like I'll stay just anywhere, but I'm not a 5 star girl by any stretch.
TA reviews aren't all negative either.
