A few questions re J*

We are flying J* Melb via Darwin. How do they
go getting you there on time for the connecting flight to Bali...
Am I allowed to take food and drink and personal DVD player onto the plane to keep the kids happy,
The Travel Agent tried to tell me I couldn't take any food etc on the plane and it really would be much better to travel Garuda. I would love to travel Garuda but the $2500 plus that it was going to cost me extra just wasn't worth it...
I got a family of 5 for $2330.00 on J* and was extremely happy with that...
