My Indonesian husband stays in a hotel with me, but is uncomfortable in expensive hotels. To start with, the other guests make assumptions (incorrect) about our relationship. Honestly, my husband doesn't look like a gigalo, and is getting rather long in the tooth for that sort of thing anyway.
The other down-side is his family and friends don't understand about the 'working hard and not rich bit' and if they see him staying in an expensive hotel, that costs half a month's wages per night, they hit him up big time for more money. He doesn't have the same issues in Australia, from other guests, and the family don't know.
The compromise is less expensive places in Indonesia - and a bit of village time.
You are fortunate if your wife doesn't get the family pressure.
