From my understanding with AA, You won't get a refund if you cancel, but they do a 1 year deferral where you can put the flight on hold for up to a year and re-book it when you're ready. The only thing is that, if there is a difference in the seat price, you will have to pay that & maybe another booking fee( not sure on that one though)
