I stayed in KL for 3 nights a couple of months ago.
The first 2 nights were at the Novotel which I think is the BEST location in KL and about $85 a night. The Pavilion shopping mall is across the road and the Petronas Towers with more shopping and a lovely park is about 5-10 mins walk (can you tell I like shopping!!).
The last night was at Chinatown Boutique Hotel right in the middle of Chinatown so that you walk outside and are straight into the markets. This was a new, small, clean place and I think quite good value at $40 a night. But the rooms are small and it is a bit noisy, so 1 or 2 nights is enough here. It is really a place to sleep.
Also, if flying Air Asia you can get their bus from the airport for about $3 one way. This will drop you off at the central train station, and you can get a taxi to your hotel for about $10.
