All that I remember of Sanur in 1975 was the Bali Beach Hotel. I had to visit the Qantas office on the ground floor to change my ticket.
I was not allowed to fly to Bali except in a group tour, so I flew to Jakarta instead and came overland to Bali.
Last year, I rode a motorcycle from Padang Bai to Sanur, with the idea of staying in Sanur instead, as a change to Kuta. On entering Sanur, the first thing I saw was a group of louts sitting behind a card table collecting some sort of unofficial toll. This made me angry. Not as angry as my Indonesian wife who usually abuses them in the local language.
I then thought that I a) did not want to pay a toll and
b) did not want to learn a whole new life support system.
I did a u turn and headed to Kuta. Before I could leave Sanur, I got hit in the rear mudguard by a taxi driver, who sped off. He destroyed the Om symbol on the mudguard which was supposed to bring me good luck.
Sanur = bad karma, at least for me.
